Electronic Care Management Systems
These are generally designed to replicate current paper systems and the associated processes and practices.  In principle this is a good solution because it does deliver a more efficient method of documentation.

Benefits include using a system that facilitates the ongoing collection, collation and management of care information eliminates the need to enter basic resident information more than once and provides management with the ability to readily retrieve and access information.

However the opportunity to address some of the known problems associated with the current paper systems have not been addressed.

That is:

  • hands on care staff delivering care do not always or want to be involved in documentation
  • hands on care staff are unsure of what to document and how to document
the majority of staff consider documentation too hard and time consuming
  • traditional practice of documenting at end of shift is always rushed and relevant care information is not always documented or is forgotten
